Today, one in two Germans is considered overweight; some 8 million Germans are even classified as morbidly overweight or obese. The World Health Organization (WHO) assumes that there are about 300 million morbidly obese persons worldwide. Research by the WHO indicates that the number of people suffering from obesity grows year by year. This trend is also noticeable in Germany, as was revealed by the microcensus conducted by the Federal Agency for Health Information. Excess weight is becoming an increasingly serious public health problem. The Obesity Academy Frankfurt aims to reverse this trend. Informing and educating people on obesity-related issues and proposing concrete solutions for the treatment of obesity are the central priorities of our work. Our association brings together experts in the field of obesity treatment. We consider it as our duty to see to it that the adverse effects associated with obesity do not determine your life. Quite the contrary, individual strategies should enable you to reduce your weight in order to improve your quality of life. As such, we act as a contact point and adviser for all obesity-related issues, both for patients and for interested physicians.
In obesity therapy, special importance is attached to the so-called Body Mass Index (BMI), which today is recognised as a practical and targeted method for determining the body-to-mass ratio. The previously commonly used Broca method, which calculates the ideal weight according to the formula “body height (in cm) - 100”, is today largely regarded as obsolete or insufficiently accurate. That is why on this site only the BMI is used as an indicator for determining excess weight. The body mass index is given by the ratio of body weight to body height.
The exact formula is: BMI = body weight in kg divided by (body height in m)²
